A seasonal garden-to-pantry experience in which participants pick ripe berries, sort and wash the harvest, process the fruit by crushing, juicing or simmering, and turn it into a finished batch of homemade jam. The works...
A sufficient ripe crop, approved harvest area, picking containers, kitchen access, tested recipe, jars and lids, processing equipment and space for jars to cool undisturbed.
Only correctly identified cultivated or wild berries should be used. Discard moldy, fermented or badly damaged fruit. Jam intended for shelf storage must follow the Advent Center’s approved recipe and jar-processing procedure; otherwise, the finished product should be refrigerated or frozen.
Harvesting may involve uneven garden or orchard ground, reaching, bending and standing; kitchen processing involves heat, lifting and sustained hand work. Seated sorting, washing, labeling and tasting roles can be arranged. Confirm step-free access and task adaptations with the host.
Seasonal variants: strawberries (June–July); raspberries (June–August); blackcurrants and redcurrants (June–July); gooseberries (June–July); blueberries (July–August); blackberries (August–September); mixed late-summer berry jam (August–September). Possible finished products: single-fruit jam, mixed-berry jam, berry juice, berry syrup, berry compote, freezer jam and reduced-sugar jam.
